Medicare Drug Card Q&A
What Are Medicare Discount Drug Cards?
Medicare is contracting with private companies to offer 40 national and 33 regional drug cards. Beneficiaries can choose one of the discount cards offered by these private companies to save costs on outpatient prescription drugs.
Do I Have To Enroll?
No, the Medicare-approved drug discount cards are voluntary. That means enrolling is your choice. If you want to enroll, contact the company offering the card you want.
Who Can Get The Discount Cards?
Almost anyone with Medicare can get a discount card. The only people who aren't eligible are those who have outpatient prescription drug coverage through Medicaid when they apply.
When Can I Get One?
You can enroll in a Medicare-approved drug discount card as early as May 2004. The discount cards will be good until at least Dec. 31, 2005, when Medicare's new prescription drug benefit is set to begin.
How Many Cards Are Available?
There are several Medicare-approved drug discount cards available. Medicare can help you compare your options before you choose a card. Private companies might also send you information about
the Medicare-approved drug discount card they are offering. You can only enroll in one Medicare-approved drug discount card each calendar year. If you are a member of a Medicare managed care plan, contact your plan about discount card options for members.
Will The Cards' Benefits Change?
Yes, a company can change its discounted drug list and the discounted prices any time. The company will give you information about, and changes to, its discount drug list if you ask them about it. Changes can also be found on the companies' Web sites and through their toll-free numbers.
Do I Have To Use Certain Pharmacies?
The company from which you choose your drug discount card will send you a pharmacy provider directory after you are enrolled. To get the discount on your prescriptions, you must go to one of the pharmacies listed in the directory. You can also find the pharmacy closest to you that accepts your Medicare-approved drug discount card by visiting Medicare.gov.
How Do I Enroll?
After you compare the benefits of the different drug discount cards, contact the company that offers the card you want and ask for an enrollment form. Depending on the company, you can apply by mailing or faxing in a completed form, or by providing your information over the phone or online. To get a card, you must apply by Dec. 31, 2005.
