EL PASO, Texas -- Imagine beating breast cancer once, only to have it come back again, and this time, you don't have the insurance to pay for treatment. That's exactly what happened to one El Paso woman and she says Susan G. Komen for the Cure saved her life."I first was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006,” Lorraine Moya recalled, “and I had treatments, I had surgeries, and thought that I was fine."And for two years, Moya was fine. But everything changed this past November when she began having symptoms again. Her doctor ordered tests, but getting them wasn't easy."I didn't have any health coverage because I became uninsurable after the first time," she said. After her first battle with breast cancer, Moya had to sell her business, leaving her without health coverage, and therefore, without treatment. That's when her doctor pointed her to the Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium."They are the ones who finally came through, I mean quickly,” she said. “Because the condition was so aggressive that I couldn't wait any longer, I had to have a biopsy immediately."Within four days, she had the tests, which confirmed the worst: the cancer was back."I'll be doing about maybe 4 chemo treatments,” she said. “I take another treatment every week, and at that point once those are over then they're going to go ahead and do a full mastectomy now to try to prevent it from coming back."Despite it all, she’s stayed positive."I'm breathing a lot easier because these things are going to be taken care of," she said. "That's the last thing you want to worry about is that you can't afford to pay for a procedure or a treatment that you have to have to live."And none of it would be possible without the Komen foundation."I did Race for the Cure for years, and you never know when it's going to come back and you're going to need that assistance,” she said. “And I'm living proof that it's here."The Cancer and Chronic Disease Consortium is one of several local grantees funded by Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Their largest moneymaker is the annual Race for the Cure which is coming up Sunday, Feb. 22.
