Women Get Hair Cuts To Fight Breast Cancer

Getting a new hair cut and make-up is how some women spent their Sunday afternoon at Jacqui Hair Salon in West El Paso. While some may think of it as pampering, the women were there for more than just beauty. With a snip of pair of scissors they are helping to fight breast cancer.

"I lost my father to cancer," said Ashley Bowling. "My college roomate's mother had cancer. It was just a tremendous opportunity to make a difference and help people who need it."

Jacqui Hair Salon hosted the 11th annual "Cut For The Cure" event. People were welcome to come in and get a hair cut and other services and their payments are donated to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure. The salon's owner, Jacqui Arriaga, is a breast cancer survivor.

"I'm a big advocate of early detection. I was very lucky. Mine was discovered through a mamogram. It was non-invasive," she said.

Folks coming into the salon found stylists decked in pink and volunteering their time and tips to the cause. Women got spiffy new hair cuts for $25. Men and children got hair cuts for $15. Some got a new look with make-up or manicures for $10.

"Seventy-five percent of those funds stay here in El Paso to help underserved men and women to get breast cancer education, screening and treatment," said Susan G. Komen For The Cure executive director Jennifer Segall.

These women may have walked out of the salon with a new look, but they left behind a way to help save a life.

Octobr is breast cancer awareness month. Jacqui Hair Salon is hosting a raffle all month long for prizes such as clothes, jewelry and make-up. Tickets are $10. The drawing will be held on Nov. 1. The salon is located at 5835 N. Mesa, near Sunland Park Drive.
