Some very interesting matchups Saturday, so let’s take a look.
VCU and Michigan is going to be fascinating: havoc vs. elegance. John Beilein’s offense is like a finely crafted watch and he is as good as anyone at moving the ball around and finding an open spot on the court.
He has Trey Burke to orchestrate the ballhandling and who better? He’s a superb point guard who can create havoc on his own.
VCU is a trendy pick and they are dangerous. But essentially they want to intimidate their opponents. When that fails, things get stickier. We respect what they do; we’re just not sure Plan B is that meticulous.
We expect Memphis State to pound Memphis every time Memphis tries to get flashy or cute. It’s just the Izzo Way: you don’t get what you want.
Anything’s possible, but we certainly don’t see Colorado State upsetting Louisville. We do think Harvard has a chance at beating Arizona though, at least partly because Arizona is not a great offensive team.
Oregon and St. Louis should be fun. As much as we’d like to see EJ Singler win out, St. Louis is a very fine, high-level group and we think they’ll prevail.
Butler and Marquette should be a delicious battle for control of pace. Both are fierce defensive teams; Marquette likes to move and Butler prefers restraint. We’ll go with Butler here.
Our feeling about Gonzaga is that if Southern’s quickness bothered them than Wichita State’s guards, quicker and stronger still, could really disorient the Zags. And if they pull it off (we think they will), the West is wide open.
For a Boeheim team, a Mike Montgomery opponent should be trouble. Smart, talented and always well coached, his teams are hard to get rid of.
We’re just not sure that he has enough talent to pull this off.
