As the nation continues to mourn December's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., that left 26 people dead, including 20 children, Jewel has joined hundreds of other voices to speak out against gun violence. The singer, who is mom to 20-month-old Kase, explains how she and her husband, Ty Murray, intend to raise their son in terms of handling violence and anger issues.

"There are different types of gun violence: self-defense, rampage killing and violence solving problems with anger," she says in a post at 1simplechange.com. "As far as anger shootings, I feel that learning how to problem solve and learning emotional skills is critical. I think it isn't something we're always taught within our family units. I hope to help teach my son to deal with frustration, and learn how to problem-solve in healthy ways, so that by the time he's older and not under my wing, he will have some skills. Then when he gets frustrated or when something arises that is confusing for him, he'll find ways of problem-solving and working through it."
