It's A Wrap For Mumme At New Mexico State

Posted: 12:01 pm MST December 2, 2008

(Sports Network) - Hal Mumme's tenure at New Mexico State came to an end Tuesday when athletic director Dr. McKinley Boston announced the school would buy out the remaining year of the football coach's contract.

Mumme posted a record of just 11-38 in four years with the Aggies, including a mark of only 4-28 in Western Athletic Conference play. New Mexico State finished the 2008 campaign 3-9, taking a step back after consecutive four-win seasons following an 0-12 record in Mumme's first year.

The school added that all of Mumme's assistant coaches will be paid through January 31, 2009, with the exception of defensive coordinator Joe Lee Dunn, who is under contract through the 2009 season and is a candidate for the head coaching position.

Mumme took over at New Mexico State after spending two seasons at Southeastern Louisiana. He was also the head coach at Kentucky from 1997-2000, where he posted a record of 20-26 with a pair of bowl appearances.

In 18 seasons as a head coach, which includes stints at Iowa Wesleyan and Valdosta State, Mumme has a career mark of 108-102-1.

Aggie football legend Charley Johnson will serve as acting head coach until a full-time successor is named.
