NCAA Game Summary - Boise State Vs. New Mexico State

POSTED: 11:50 pm MDT March 15, 2008

(Sports Network) - Reggie Larry scored 31 points and tore down 16 rebounds as Boise State earned its first NCAA Tournament bid in more than a decade with a 107-102 triple-overtime victory over New Mexico State in a wild marathon of a WAC Championship game.

Matt Nelson had 26 points and nine rebounds for the Broncos (25-8), though he had to watch the majority of the final two extra sessions from the bench after fouling out. Matt Bauscher added 14 points and nine boards for Boise State, which last reached the field of 65 in 1994.

"I'm proud of our guys, they hung tough," said Boise State coach Greg Graham. "At times people sold them short but they wouldn't give up. We've hung in there and raised the bar forever at Boise State."

Freshman Herb Pope scored 20 points and tore down eight rebounds to lead New Mexico State (21-14), which erased a 16-point second-half deficit only to fade in the third OT and come up short in a bid for its second consecutive NCAA berth.

The Aggies were down as many as six early in the third OT before rallying to within two on a couple free throws from Hatila Passos, who had kept the game alive with his three-point play in the first overtime.

But Anthony Thomas converted a difficult wraparound finish in the lane and drew a foul, then hit a free throw for a 102-97 Broncos lead with just 42.6 ticks on the clock. A questionable over-and-back call on the ensuing Aggies possession then led to a pair of free throws by Larry and a seven-point advantage.

New Mexico State had one more furious flurry in it, even trimming the edge to three when Justin Hawkins nailed a triple with seven seconds to go, but the Broncos held on by hitting their free throws to end a very long night.

"I'm physically drained," Larry said. "It's the championship game, tired or not you gotta go hard and I believe I did that."

Thomas totaled 13 points and five boards for the Broncos, while Tyler Tiedeman finished with 17 points, hitting five three-pointers.

Passos had 15 and 15 boards for the Aggies, and Fred Peete scored 17. Hawkins and Jonathan Gibson were also in double figures with 18 and 15, respectively.

Gibson's deep three-pointer with just 18.7 seconds remaining in regulation gave the Aggies their first lead since the second minute of the game, 71-70. But Larry hit 1-of-2 free throws with 16.8 ticks remaining to tie the game, and Peete's contested leaner clanged off the rim to force the first OT.

The lead switched hands repeatedly in the initial extra session, but Boise State found itself ahead 80-77 after freshman Paul Noonan drained two free throws with 12.9 seconds to go.

New Mexico State missed a pair of three-point attempts to tie, but Passos was fouled while converting the putback, then hit a huge free throw to force the second overtime.

It was the Aggies who took control to start the second OT, jumping to a four- point advantage, and NMSU appeared in good shape when Nelson picked up his fifth foul less than 30 seconds in. But Boise State scored seven straight - capped by Larry's two free throws - to go up 92-89 with under a minute left.

But Hawkins hit a free throw to make it a two-point game, then sliced into the lane for the game-tying bucket with less than 15 seconds remaining. The Broncos couldn't get a good look on the ensuing possession, and a third overtime was necessary.

Larry scored 11 early points as the Broncos raced out to a commanding 17-3 lead in the opening eight minutes, but New Mexico State recovered to pull within five on a Hawkins dunk with 6:17 to go before the half, and the Aggies trailed 34-27 at the break.

"We talked about getting off to a quick start," Larry said. "Before when we've been here we've gotten behind early. We've always been scrambling, we wanted to put them on their heels."

Peete drilled a three for the first points of the second half, bringing NMSU within four, but Boise State rattled off the next eight unanswered. Matt Bauscher's three at the 13:45 mark had the Broncos up 52-36 before the Aggies responded with an 8-0 run of their own - capped by Wendell McKines' three- point play - to make it 52-44 with just under 12 minutes to go.

Tiedeman's three gave the Broncos some much-needed breathing room with 7:49 remaining and the score at 61-48. But the Aggies surged again, and even after Tiedeman hit another triple to make it 66-59, NMSU rallied once more.

Game Notes:

Boise State hit 10-of-22 three-point attempts, and made 48.1 percent of its field goals on the night...The Broncos were just 21-for-30 from the foul line, but NMSU was even worse, hitting just 20-of-37 (54 percent); Passos was 11- for-18 from the free throw line for the Aggies and Larry was 8-of-13 for the Broncos.
