Caught On Tape: Hudspeth County Chase
It's the high speed chase that's opened eyes in Washington. Three SUV's loaded with drugs speeding back from I-10 in a run for the border. And a dashboard camera captured the dramatic moments.
"I took over the pursuit immediately after the DPS troopers went off the road and pursued (a) blue Ford Expedition down the levy road," said Hudspeth County Deputy Kelly Legarreta.
When he got to the river, there was a surprise.
"I encountered a military style humvee parked on the levy road. (Then) I took cover behind my vehicle and I requested backup."
Legaretta was one of those testifying in Washington at subcommittee hearings of the U.S. House. His account has been questioned by U.S. Representative Silvestre Reyes, who also testified at the hearing. Reyes says it's perfectly understandable that someone under stress could mistake military vehicles and weapons for those of drug smugglers pretending to be soldiers.
But Legarreta is insistent. "I've been in the military myself and I know what a military vehicle looks like." The Deputy also says the two occupants of the Humvee were wearing Mexican military uniforms. "In my honest opinion I believe that both were military soldiers."
One SUV blew a tire and was captured with its load of drugs - but the driver escaped across the border. A second SUV made it safely to the Mexican side. The Humvee tried to pull out a third SUV that became stuck in the river, but was unsuccessful. As heavily armed men protected the vehicle, it was unloaded and then set on fire.
