Potholes In Horizon Road Finally Get Fixed

Monday, August 18, 2008 – updated: 6:18 pm MDT August 18, 2008

Monday morning TX Dot crews began working on a construction project in Horizon Boulevard on Ashford Street.

"There's a big problem with the road; the cars break down a lot because there's a lot of potholes," said Martha Griego from Sparks, Texas.

Standing water, potholes, and no sidewalks make drivers commute on Ashford Street difficult.

"They only cover the holes through the top and when it rains the holes get bigger. I've gotten a flat tire here several times because of the potholes," Griego said.

Detours are set up blocking off Ashford Street from Horizon Boulevard to Ryderwood Avenue. All access to traffic going south is detoured to Ryderwood Avenue and onto Darrington Road. Drivers traveling north will still have a right lane that will remain open. Drivers said these road closures create traffic tie-ups during school hours by Colonel John O. Ensor Middle school and Horizon Heights Elementary.

"They took long; they had all of the vacations to advance the project, at least a little bit, and they didn't," said Griego.

Residents living in a secluded subdivision next to the construction project said it's going to be a hassle to get to their homes.

"We're going to have to drive all the way around," said Leticia Figueroa, of Horizon, Texas.

Leticia Figueroa said although construction on Ashford Street. is very necessary, it's going to be tough to deal with the long construction closures.

"I don't see why they blocked the whole street. Sections would be fine; it's bad enough as it is without this. It's going to take at least 30 minutes to get by," Figueroa said.

Once construction is completed, Ashford street will have new school zones, traffic signals, sidewalks and ADA concrete curbs.

TxDOT officials said construction is expected to be completed in March 2009.
