New On DVD: 'Friday The 13th'

Reboot Brings Horror Film Icon Back To Life

Posted: 9:40 am MDT June 19, 2009

'Friday the 13th': In a smart move to reboot the series, Jason is back (and he's none too happy) in a new "Friday the 13th" film -- a vast improvement over the past several watered-down films since the franchise began in 1980.

The new "Friday" stars Jared Padalecki ("Supernatural"), Danielle Panabaker ("Sky High") and the imposing Derek Mears as the new Jason Voorhees, "Friday the 13th" somewhat melds the early films in the original series together, by chronicling Jason's disturbing origins at Camp Crystal Lake and the discovery of the famed screen slasher's iconic hockey mask (which wasn't introduced in the original series until the third film).

While the kills are as bloody as ever and the thrills are amped up for the new "Friday the 13th," what appears to remain the same from the original are the mostly moronic teenage characters who can't quite figure out that danger is lurking around the corner, even if they're life depended on it -- what little life they have left, that is. Gone almost completely is the tongue-in-cheek humor that peppered the last Jason movie, "Freddy Vs. Jason."

Fans of jump-out-of-your-seat horror will not be disappointed. The unrated, extended version has more graphic violence than the theatrical version, and, keeping in tradition with the 80s films, much more sex. Naturally, the conclusion leaves the door wide open for much more Jason.

DVD Features: Two versions of the disc are available: the theatrical version and the "Extended Killer Cut," the latter of which promises more gore and sex scenes. Features include multiple production featurettes, a Terror Trivia Track (including making of picture-in-picture footage) and more. (Warner Home Video)
